The land area Rochester Hills is 32.8 square miles. Although Rochester Hills has been highly developed with many beautiful neighborhoods over the last few decades, it retains much of it rural charm with beautiful, winding roads, golf courses, and lots of parks, lakes and open space.
The River Rouge is a tributary to the Detroit River. The headwaters of the main branch rise in the southwest corner of Rochester Hills and the northeast corner of Bloomfield Township. It flows mostly south through the western part of Troy, and then flows southwest through Birmingham, a noncontiguous portion of Bloomfield Township, Beverly Hills, the southeast corner of Bingham Farms, Southfield. It then flows mostly south through western Detroit.
Stony Creek is a tributary of the Clinton River that flows through portions of Oxford, Addison, Bruce, Oakland, and Washington townships and the cities of Rochester Hills and Rochester before entering the Clinton River just east of downtown Rochester. It is the areas “hidden jewel”. The Stony Creek subwatershed features pristine natural areas, such as the Lakeville Swamp in Addison Township and north unit of Bald Mountain State Recreation Area in Oakland Township, as well as Stony Creek Metropark in western Washington Township. Stony Creek also has a rich cultural history, with many old mill sites and the historic Van Hoosen Farm, now Rochester Hills Museum.
